Happy Holidays, ShokzSquad!
Steffanie here from the ShokzStars team. Recently I teamed up with AfterShokz for their #GiveGoodVibez campaign. I was sent a pair of open-box Titanium headphones to gift to someone special—specifically, someone who is involved in their community. I chose my friend, Sheryl, who has one of the most giving hearts of anyone I know.
I’ve been friends with Sheryl for over fifteen years. As long as I’ve known her, she has been involved in community groups of one kind or another, usually with other mothers or children, or both. She is strong in her faith and tends to align herself with Christian ministries, with a particular call to serve middle school girls. Sheryl became a leader of her daughter’s Young Life group during her middle school years, hosting and leading weekly group discussions and fostering fellowship through group outings. During this time, she also volunteered with the local middle school AVID programs to make “regular” connections with these same girls, not just as their spiritual leader.
After her daughter entered high school, Sheryl stepped back from her leadership role but she continues to support other Young Life leaders. She brings food to group gatherings, helps with transportation to outings, and offers her home as a place to meet when needed. Sheryl, who is a registered nurse, also volunteers as a camp nurse for one week every summer at Royal Family Kids’ Camps. This organization serves children who are victims of neglect, abuse, and abandonment.
Still feeling that special connection to middle school girls, Sheryl now co-leads a ministry at her church. Leading anywhere from twelve to twenty-four girls at a time, she meets with them twice weekly for fellowship and spiritual guidance. She remains with these girls from sixth through eighth grade, providing a real opportunity to form meaningful relationships with them and be a positive role model in their lives. Part of this ministry includes engaging in community service projects. Recently, they met to put together shampoo and conditioner packs for Northwest Children’s Outreach, an organization that serves children of all ages in need.
As if Sheryl didn’t have enough on her plate, she and her daughter recently began volunteering at Maternity House. This home provides a safe place to stay for otherwise homeless pregnant women and their young children. During bible study time, Sheryl and her daughter provide babysitting services to those wishing to attend.
In addition to all of these services and ministries, Sheryl works a part-time job (which she loves) and is a devoted wife and mother to her three children—a high school student, a college student, and a recent college graduate starting his adult life. She is a devoted friend and is always there when you need her. She is humble to a fault. The minute you throw any accolades her way, she is quick to try and put the focus back on you. When I asked her to tell me about the things she does, she said, “Oh, it’s not that much. Just a few little things.” In my opinion, these few little things add up to a whole lot.
Thank you, Sheryl, for all you do. You are amazing and so deserving of all things good! Do you have a friend who Gives Good Vibez to their community? Share your story with the rest of the #ShokzSquad on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter!
