For everyday training, that difference is rarely a problem. Many Shokz models are built to handle sweat, rain, and splashes without missing a beat. But for swimming, full submersion, and underwater use, only a select part of the lineup is designed for the job.

So, are Shokz headphones waterproof? The short answer is no — not across the board. Most are made for land. OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro are the exceptions built for the water.

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant: The Difference That Actually Matters

This is the line that decides whether your headphones belong on a wet run or in a lap lane.

Water-resistant means a device is built to tolerate some exposure to moisture. Think sweat rolling down your neck, light rain on a morning jog, or the kind of splash that comes with everyday movement.

Waterproof means something more demanding. It means the product is designed to survive submersion within specific limits.

That might sound like technical wording. In practice, it is simple. If you are training outdoors, running in bad weather, or working out in a humid gym, many Shokz models are made for that. If you want to swim laps, float in open water, or stay fully submerged, you are in a different category entirely.

With Shokz, most of the lineup is built for movement on land. OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro are the models intended for in-water use.

What IP Ratings Mean in Plain English

An IP rating is a lab-tested protection grade. The letters stand for Ingress Protection, and the two digits that follow tell you what the device was tested to withstand.

Think of it as a controlled benchmark, not a promise of invincibility.

That matters because even open-ear headphones are still full of vulnerable hardware: charging contacts, seals, transducers, and internal electronics. The design may leave your ears open, but water can still find its way to the parts that matter.

The first number: dust protection

The first digit refers to protection against solids like dust.

If you see ratings like IP55, IP67, or IP68, that first number is useful — but it is usually not the one people care about most. If your question is about rain, sweat, splashes, showers, or swimming, the second number is where the story changes.

The second number: water protection

The second digit tells you how much water exposure the headphones survived during testing.

Here is the practical version:

  • 5 = resists water jets, sweat, and splashes

  • 7 = survives temporary submersion in shallow water

  • 8 = rated for continuous submersion under defined conditions

That is why IP55 and IP68 are not close substitutes. One is built for weather and workouts. The other is built for something harsher: life underwater.

Why Lab Ratings and Real Life Are Not Always the Same

IP testing happens in controlled conditions. Real life rarely does.

Sweat contains salt. Pool water often contains chlorine. Open water adds debris, motion, and pressure shifts. A shower can strike harder than still water in a test tank. Hot water can stress seals differently than cool water. And heavy sweating can push moisture into places a few light splashes never would.

What it is not meant for is submersion.

Once water covers the headset, the challenge changes. It is no longer about resisting moisture on the surface. It becomes about keeping water from entering under pressure. IP55 protection is for exposure from the outside, not time spent underwater.

For many people, that's exactly the balance they need. But if swimming is part of your routine—or you simply want higher water protection—OpenSwim Pro is the better fit.

IP67 model: OpenRun

OpenRun has an IP67 rating, which adds protection against temporary immersion in fresh water.

That extra margin can be reassuring if you train in unpredictable weather or occasionally end up with more water exposure than expected. It is still best suited to running, cycling, and everyday workouts rather than swimming.

Like other Bluetooth headphones, OpenRun is not intended for underwater listening. Water quickly weakens wireless signals, so even with stronger water protection than IP55 models, it is not a substitute for a swim-specific headset.

IP68 models: OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro

OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro have an IP68 rating, making them the Shokz models built for swimming and full submersion. If you're looking for waterproof headphones for swimming, these are the models to consider.

That higher rating is only part of the story, though. The more important detail is this: Bluetooth does not work reliably underwater.

Water weakens wireless signals fast, especially around the human body. So even if the headset itself can handle the pool, the connection to your phone usually cannot. That is why these swim-capable models include MP3 mode for underwater listening. Your audio is stored directly on the headset, so playback does not depend on a signal making its way through water.

It is a smart solution to a very specific problem. In a lap pool, your phone is usually sitting on the deck while your head keeps dipping below the surface. A normal wireless stream cuts in and out. Local playback does not.

One swimmer described it simply: "In the water they're a godsend! Especially during the loooong kick set. Just make sure to keep your head submerged." That last part reflects how bone conduction behaves in water: stable contact helps keep the sound more consistent.


What You Can and Can’t Do With Your Shokz

The easiest way to think about it is this: match the activity to the rating before the headphones get wet.

Safe for all current models

For most current Shokz models, running in the rain, sweaty workouts, bottle splashes, and humid gym sessions are generally fine.

This is where Shokz feels especially well suited to real exercise. Traditional earbuds can start to feel slippery, sealed, or irritating once sweat builds up. Shokz avoids that blocked-ear sensation, and the water resistance is there to support the kind of moisture that naturally comes with training.

After use, dry them off. And before charging, make sure they are fully dry.

Safe only for swim-rated models

Lap swimming, pool training, and open-water sessions belong to OpenSwim and OpenSwim Pro.

In these conditions, use MP3 mode, not Bluetooth.

Underwater use is simply more demanding. Water presses against the headset continuously. Your stroke creates constant movement. Every turn can shift fit and contact. Swim-rated Shokz are built for that combination. The stronger ingress protection helps keep water out, while onboard storage keeps your audio going when wireless signals cannot.

Not safe for any Shokz model

Some environments are a no, regardless of rating.

Hot tubs are not safe. Pressure washing is not safe. Deep or prolonged submersion beyond the rated limit is not safe.

Heat can weaken seals. High-pressure water can hit harder than the rating was designed to handle. Even the most water-capable model in the lineup still has boundaries.

If Your Shokz Got Wetter Than They Should Have

If your headphones were exposed to more water than their rating allows, stop using them right away.

Shake off excess water. Wipe them down. Then let them air dry completely before charging or powering them on again.

Avoid shortcuts. Do not use a hair dryer, heater, or direct high heat to speed things up. Heat can damage seals, materials, and battery components just as easily as water can. Leave the charging contacts dry and uncovered until you are confident no moisture remains.

If the headphones are not working properly afterward, check your 2-year warranty and contact support. Water damage is not something to test repeatedly once you suspect a problem. If the headphones were used outside their rating, coverage may be limited. But if the issue happened during normal rated use, it is worth documenting what happened and asking for help.
