OpenFit Air 2: Engineering the lightest open-ear experience yet

Put them on—and forget they’re even there.

Meet OpenFit Air 2, the lightest generation in the Shokz open-ear hook lineup yet. At 7.2g (± 0.2g) per earbud, it pushes barely-there comfort even further, without compromising sound quality, stability, or battery life.

Reaching 7.2g wasn’t simply about making a lighter earbud. It was about rethinking how an open-ear earbud feels throughout an entire day of listening.

Why every gram matters

For an open-ear earbud, all-day comfort depends on one critical factor: weight.

Even adding a single gram changes how an earbud feels in motion. Walking, running, or cycling increases swing inertia, making that extra weight more noticeable over time.

That insight became a guiding principle for the OpenFit Air 2 engineering team. They set an ambitious goal: reduce each earbud to 7.2g while still maintaining flagship-level audio performance and stability.

In a mature product design, removing even a fraction of a gram affects everything, from balance and structural strength to acoustic performance. Rather than trimming weight from one component, the R&D team reworked the earbud’s overall geometry, redesigning the driver, acoustic chamber, pod, and frame as a complete system.

How we reached 7.2g

Achieving a weight of 7.2g (± 0.2g) required nearly a year of development, including five major design iterations and more than 150 refinements.

Working within micron-scale dimensions, the engineering team continually balanced three competing priorities: lightness, sound quality, and stability. Here are some of the key engineering innovations that made that balance possible:

● Smarter packaging for better sound: A newly designed, slimmer battery module freed up space for Shokz’s Bassphere™ dual-driver system, featuring two high-sensitivity 11.8 mm round speakers. This more compact internal layout allowed the pod to become narrower, reducing pressure on the tragus while delivering bass performance comparable to a custom 16 mm driver.

● Optimizing the listening path: the speaker module is angled 30°, while the entire acoustic assembly tilts 14° inward. These adjustments shorten the sound path to the ear canal and improve listening efficiency while reducing pressure against the face.

● Strength where it matters: Making a product lighter doesn’t always mean making every component thinner. While the external ear-hook was slimmed down, the internal titanium support wire was actually increased to 0.75 mm【2】. This added stiffness helps maintain a secure fit during running, workouts, and other high-movement activities without increasing overall weight.

● Designed with data, not assumptions: Comfort can’t be verified on paper alone. Over 8 months, engineers conducted hundreds of hours of high-intensity blind testing across a wide range of ear shapes. The result is a design refined through extensive real-world testing rather than theoretical optimization alone.

More than a lighter earbud

Weight reduction was only one part of the project.

OpenFit Air 2 also introduces OpenBass™ 2.0 for deeper, more impactful low frequencies; delivers up to 36 hours of total listening time with the charging case【1】; features dual-microphone AI noise reduction for clearer calls; adds a refined gradient finish; and includes upgraded pressure-sensitive buttons that help reduce accidental touches.

The 7.2g result isn’t just another specification. It’s the result of hundreds of engineering decisions made within micron-scale tolerances, all working toward one goal: making an open-ear earbud that’s easier to forget you’re wearing. .

Next: Part 1: Rethinking the Front End. See how the engineering team used subtraction, rotation, and a spherical driver architecture to create more space, reduce pressure, and improve comfort within an extremely compact design.
