However, this distance did not immediately become the universal standard for all marathons. In 1921, the distance of 26 miles 385 yards (42.195 kilometers) was formally standardized as the official marathon distance. The 1924 Paris Olympic Games also used this distance, helping establish it as the standard used around the world.
So why is a marathon 42.195 kilometers, or approximately 26.2 miles?
The answer is not that the ancient Greeks established this distance. Rather, the modern marathon was inspired by an ancient Greek legend, while its precise modern distance originated from the particular course used at the 1908 London Olympics and was formally standardized in 1921.
And technically, 26.2 miles is only an approximation. The exact imperial measurement is 26 miles and 385 yards, which equals approximately 26.21875 miles.
