
When you put on OpenFit Air 2, the first thing you notice is usually how light it feels—just 7.2g per earbud, 17.2% lighter than the previous OpenFit Air.
But achieving that reduction wasn’t simply about shaving off a few more grams. The engineering team faced a fundamental design problem: great sound typically requires a larger driver, while barely-there comfort demands an ultra-compact front pod. Both compete for the same space.
The front end of OpenFit Air 2 was redesigned to resolve that conflict.
Many open-ear hook earbuds rely on a racetrack-shaped driver: long, space-hungry, and more likely to create sharp edges around the pod. Over time, those edges can press against the tragus, creating pressure during extended wear. It’s not simply a matter of poor shaping; the geometry itself creates the pressure point.
OpenFit Air 2 takes a different approach with the Bassphere™ spherical dual-driver system, featuring two 11.8 mm high-sensitivity round drivers that deliver acoustic performance comparable to a custom 16 mm driver【1】.
Compared with a racetrack-shaped driver, the spherical design offers two key advantages:
● A narrower middle section that clears the tragus: Without the right-angled edges of an elongated driver, the pod can taper through the middle, better follow the natural curve of the outer ear, and reduce pressure points.
● A smaller front-facing footprint: The spherical design delivers powerful bass without requiring a wide, boxy front pod, helping support the overall 7.2g weight target.
A sphere-shaped driver trims the pod’s width and removes sharp edges that press on the tragus.
Think of a racetrack-shaped driver like a rectangular object trying to fit into a pocket–it catches on the corners before it slides in. A spherical driver is more like a ball: it occupies less frontal area while still delivering impressive acoustic performance.
To make the front end lighter, the pod also had to become narrower and shorter. Engineers developed a slimmer, more elongated battery module and gradually reduced the pod’s width through multiple design iterations.
That created another challenge. As the pod becomes smaller, the sound port moves farther from the ear canal, affecting both volume and directionality.
To overcome this, OpenFit Air 2 incorporates two carefully engineered geometric adjustments:
● 30° front-view rotation: Directs the speaker module more precisely toward the ear canal.
● 14° inward tilt: Shortens the sound path and improves acoustic targeting.
Together, these angles bring the sound port closer to the ear canal, helping preserve both sound quality and volume despite the smaller pod.
This isn’t about pressing the earbud more tightly against your face. It’s about directing sound more efficiently. As acoustic transmission improves, pressure around the tragus can be reduced, making the earbud more comfortable to wear for longer periods.
A 30° tilt and 14° inward angle direct the sound more precisely at your ear—so you don’t need to press the earbud firmly against your cheek for clearer volume.
The spherical drivers help the pod clear the tragus, while the 30° shrotation and 14° inward tilt guide sound more directly into the ear canal. Together, these design changes create a simple user benefit: you don’t need the earbud pressing firmly against your face to experience full, rich sound.
Traditional bulky front-end designs often rely on greater facial contact to achieve strong audio performance. OpenFit Air 2 instead behaves more like a compact directional speaker positioned beside your ear. By improving sound-transmission efficiency, it delivers powerful audio while reducing the physical pressure placed on the cheek.
That’s the engineering story behind the front end of OpenFit Air 2: not simply making the housing smaller, but using geometry to improve acoustic efficiency— allowing 7.2g of hardware to deliver both outstanding sound and lasting comfort.
